Welcome to my domain...if you dare...

Welcome to my blog about life as a writer and the craziness it involves with struggles of daily life. Make yourself at home but only if you don't mind a little messiness from time to time. This isn't the Home and Garden blog or Martha Stewart so don't expect cute little crafts with homemade goodies. That's not happening in the world of vamps, weres, and other things that go bump in the night...well...maybe homemade blood cakes topped with 'scream a la cream' sweetness along with the sexy alpha males who serve it up.

DragonCon...and the freak goes to...

Playin' around as Simi
When I was a little girl, dressing up was part of my playtime.  You see, I grew up with three older brothers and we lived out in the country...far, far, away from any of my school friends.  So in order to entertain myself, I dressed up in whatever I found or created...among other things.  I'm sure all my times alone manifested many of my eccentric and wild imaginary friends.

With that being said, it's not far fetch theory that I thrive in an environment such as DragonCon.  It's like a beacon to my soul...calling me home; a security blanket in this hectic world of reality.  Some may think that DCon is freaky or odd but not me.  When I step off the elevator and I see Charonte demons, aliens, or Lord of the Rings' hobbits...I instantly think, 'family' but not as dysfunctional as my own...ahem...that's another blog.  Anyway, DragonCon comforts and stimulates me.

Sherrilyn Kenyon speaking at the NYT
Best Sellers Panel.

at Dark Hunters party.
It's an amazing time to rejuvenate my creative juices in my writing as well as a time to let loose and be free from the 'not so pretty' reality the world can be at times.  Plus I do love to get my freak on and rebel just a tad but it's all good fun.

Cruxshadows concert
Besides attending the vampire ball, and the Cruxshadows concert, I did actually have the opportunity to hear several NYT Bestsellers speak.  This phenomenal panel consisted of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jonathan Maberry, Laurell K Hamilton, Jim Butcher, A J Hartley, and Kevin J. Anderson.  It was an enlightening, informative, and hysterical time for readers and authors alike.  The wisdom behind all of these talents was mind boggling.  I felt like a succubus and vampire rolled into one...ready to nail my next story up against the wall while sinking my fangs into previous revisions.  It so turned me on...yep...that's me...ready for climax.

On that note...I'll leave you all with some pictures for this wonderful adventure called, DragonCon.  Remember, it's not all that strange when one grows up in the mist of wonderland. :)

  1. that is so awesome JD! Looks like you had a great time and I love your writing style. I've always wanted to go to a Star Trek convention. funny because when I was a kid I did not get sci-fi, but I love it now. Or maybe I just love the hunky actors who portray aliens??

  3. That looks like so much fun! I think I would totally be into something like that. I always wanted to go to ComicCon which I think is similar. I love fantasy novels, LOTR, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Sookie Stackhouse, and so on! Not to meniotn all the fun superhero films.

I actaully did my thesis on Harry Potter. I know the movie version is a little young for me, but the fictional character in the book was born in the same year as me, so I have a little cursh on Harry Potter. :)

Oh, and I grew up on a farm far from everyone too, but with two younger sisters. We dressed up a lot, made up our own games and I read a lot! Especailly in the cold winters that we have in Minnesota.

  4. Kellie - LMAO!! Yeah, the eye candy is definitely nice isn't it. :)

Christine - Thank you and yes it was a lot of fun.

Kasey - Yep, lots of fun and I loved it. Isn't ComicCon out in San Diego? I've been wanting to go there too. It looks like that would be a great Con as well.

DragonCon isn't only fun but offers wonderful workshops regarding writing, film and tv, games and graphics, costume designs and so forth.

I think every writer, especially if you write sci/fi, paranormal, high fantasy, will find it beneficial for their writing careers to attend DragonCon or another type of sci/fi con. I also believe that the environment can inspire all writers regardless of their genres.

Thank you everyone. I really love hearing everyone's thoughts. Thanks again for sharing. Have a wonderful day.

    HUGS,

    JD :)
